During the Summer Preparation Course Year 7 and Year 10 students of Assumption College English Program school did more serious study each day than the younger students in Years 1 and 4.
The lessons were in preparation for the school year ahead and the teachers tried to make the learning activities interesting to help our secondary school students retain what they learned and to help them to enjoy their first month at their new school.
Below are details and some photographs of what our Year 7 and 10 students did during the Summer Preparation Course with their teachers:
-
Biology-Year 10
-
Cells-in general
-
Animal and Plants Cells Similarities and Differences Cell Organelles and their functions.

-
General Science for everyday life
-
Focus on innovations
-
Concentrated on health and variety of fruits and vegetables. Each student specialized in one.
-
Year 7 and Year 10 Computers
-
Students learned to communicate with the teacher, submit assignments, and keep up with coursework on the Edmodo.com social learning network.
-
They learned to recognize the most common file types and extensions.
-
They learned about typical file sizes, starting from the smallest measurement up to the largest.
-
They learned the definition and purpose of mind mapping.
-
Students used web-based software to create their own mind maps used to link concepts and retain information.
-
Year 7 Computers:
-
Using a social education network (Edmodo) for schoolwork and communication
-
Creating and exporting mind maps using a free web app
-
Year 10 Computers:
-
Using a social education network (Edmodo) for schoolwork and communication
-
Introduction to online real-time collaboration using Google Docs
-

-
Year 7 Mathematics in the real world.
-
Creating and exporting mind maps
-
Modeling with arithmetic (integers addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division).
-
Observing number patterns (number series and infinite series).
-
Observing mathematics in Nature (Fibonacci Sequences and Golden Ratios).
-
Observing patterns in geometry (polygons, sum of interior angles and exterior angles of various polygons)
-
Some definitions in arithmetic and geometry.
-

-
Students were asked for their thoughts on how we can make our school a greener place. After a brainstorming session students came up with the idea of creating recycling areas within their classrooms.
-
Students made the following recycling bins; paper, batteries, aluminum cans, bottles and used oil from the canteen. Plants were planted in 7/1 classroom.
-
Students watched a video on recycling and completed an accompanying worksheet.
-
Students created mind maps of ‘saving energy in my school’ and also students used their creative and imaginative skills to design ‘green environmentally friendly homes.’
-
Year 10 – Introduction to Physics
-
Students were introduced to the various fields of physics, such as; Kinematics, Mechanics, Angular Motion, Electromagnetism, Optics, Waves, Thermodynamics and Atomic/Subatomic Physics. Students learned that physics is the interaction between matter and energy.
-
Math for Physics. Students were exposed to some basic math skills which will be needed to be successful in the foundation physics course. Areas included; cross multiplication and proportions, ratios, exponents, scientific notation and significant figures.
-
